Peer Tutors

TRIO Peer Tutors have the opportunity to make an important contribution towards the academic success of our scholars through Drop In tutorial session and one-on-one appointments. The TRIO tutors provide academic support, study skills and tips for our scholars in various academic disciplines, such as: Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Statistics, and Writing.

Tutoring is offered Week 1 through Week 10. For tutoring, please visit our office at Student Success Initiatives. It is highly encouraged that TRIO Scholars make an appointment for one-on-one tutoring sessions. However, drop-ins are also an option for students.

Thuy Nguyen is a second-year Data Science major with a passion for using data to solve real-world problems. She is currently working on a project focused on identifying potential vertiports for the future of air mobility and has come to appreciate the significant impact data can have on shaping lives. As a data science major, her goal is to apply her skills to become a problem solver and contribute to improving the living conditions of society.

Fun Facts: Outside of her academic and project work, Thuy enjoys playing badminton and watching K-dramas and C-dramas. She is always happy to offer help in any of these areas.

Tara Jennings

 Tara Jennings (she/her) is a first-generation college student in her fourth year as a Biological Sciences major with a pre-med focus. She currently conducts cancer research as a Bio199 student in a lab within the Department of Pathology at the UCI School of Medicine. In addition, she has the opportunity to shadow physicians at the UCI Medical Center through the Irvine Clinical Experience program. After graduation, she plans to continue her research while applying to medical schools.

As a tutor, Tara’s goal is not only to provide academic support but also to inspire curiosity and confidence in students, helping them reach their academic goals. She primarily tutors courses related to the Biological Sciences major, including biology, physics, and math. She welcomes questions about study strategies, research opportunities, and tutoring support. Tara is also happy to share her experiences as a pre-med student or discuss her research journey.

Valery Montinola

Valery is a first-generation college graduate, born and raised in Los Angeles. She earned her Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine. Over the course of nearly five years, she worked and volunteered with nonprofits, supporting families and students. As a tutor, she had the opportunity to meet individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Her students left a profound impact on her academic and personal endeavors. Inspired by the people she met, she chose to participate in a global development program where she traveled to Switzerland. Her time there strengthened her commitment to using finance and law as tools for advancing social impact. Committed to driving meaningful change, Valery plans to attend law school to help shape policies that promote justice and create pathways to opportunity. Her family is her greatest motivation.

Fun Facts: Valery is also an avid reader, outdoor adventurer, and hockey enthusiast who enjoys connecting with people from all walks of life.
